When you have a gala to go to, you want style. If you have to be on your feet the entire time, you want comfort.
I had a big event to attend and help host with about 800 guests. So that means up early to volunteer with set-up and then on my feet to mix and mingle from about 10:30am – 3:30pm. My goal was to be cute, of course…and comfy. That actually sounds like a life goal! lol. Basically to create something that was flattering without me having to suck in my stomach. 🙂
And the pattern of choice was this Mimi G Style jumpsuit from Simplicity, S8426. I just love Mimi G! I love her style and the fact that she’s so dang authentic. 100% real. If you haven’t checked out her new podcast, you should, Business S.H.E.T. If there’s an ounce of entrepreneurial spirit in you, start with some of the wisdom she drops. Oooh, but back to the jumpsuit, Mimi has curves that I don’t, but magically the patterns are drafted to suit a wide range and this jumpsuit was no exception.
It’s fairly straightforward sewing, but if you get stuck, Mimi G has posted a sew-a-long for this pattern on YouTube. My only construction sticking point was making sure all seams along the invisible back zipper matched, which required me to insert the zipper twice and to hem the palazzo pants to the proper break point over my shoes.
The fabric I selected was this divine “Luxe Crepe” in emerald green from Michael Levine. Luxe must mean stretch, because the description does say it is a woven with stretch, but it REALLY has give. It behaved similar to a knit, except with the telltale fraying. With the significant synthetic component, I had to be very careful when pressing seams. Other than that, it was a great fabric to work with.
In terms of alterations, because of the stretch component, I cut a size 12 top and a 10 bottom. I could have easily sized down to a 10, so that forced me to alter the back bodice and side seams to accommodate the stretch. Just the bodice is lined and there are in-seam pockets…which is always a bonus.
At my event, I receive soooo many compliments! And further more, I just discovered that I like green! You know I’m a fan of the tried and trues: black, white, beige, grey, navy and my precious pink. But never green, even though I know jewel tones look better against my skin. Well, I’m a convert now, so there may be more in the future.
All in all, I give this pattern high marks because of ease of sewing, finished product and fit. This is one of the nicer pieces that I’ve sewn and I’m sure it will get lots of wear.
STYLING
The simple neckline is screaming for a statement piece of jewelry because there is nothing to compete with it. The jumpsuit and color stand alone, so there are many options. I chose a gold rhinestone collar “Donaho” necklace from Aldo to compliment the green. The “Ethidia” earrings are bold but simple and from Aldo as well.
Here is the sew-a-long from Mimi G.
