I try to support Indie sewing patterns because I admire any start-up and empowerment effort. Even if I don’t patronize the business, I’m still here for them. BUT…long pause, not all pattern drafting is created equal. Honestly, some indie patterns are basic and boxy. Not to mention they can be very pricey when compared to Joann Fabric’s sale of the Big 4 (McCalls, Vogue, Butterick & Simplicity). But let’s be honest, $1.99 vs $15.00 in the grand scheme of things isn’t that big of a deal. But still, I do my research when shopping the Indie’s because I want my money’s worth.
So enter True Bias’ highly popular Ogden Cami. It’s paper version is constantly solid out.
Cami’s have always been around in some form or another, either as lingerie or layered. But now they are enjoying elevated, stand alone status. Yo, this basic little pattern is legit!
The construction of this top is very simple. Only a few pieces. It goes together even easier. I did not follow the order of the instructions. I sewed one side seam of the bodice and the facing, finished the bottom edge, then sewed the opposing side seam. This allows the edge to be done in one continuous finish. That’s a strategy I use often.
Also, to make the transition between the bodice top and the straps, I pinched with my fingers at the top of the bodice to feel for where the straps were. This is at Step 7. Then I sewed as close as I could along the arm holes and neckline without catching the straps. Other than that, no other creative edits.
As for fabric, this is truly some leftover scraps from a dress I made years ago. It’s a synthetic blend in this scrumptious fuchsia and is completely opaque.
In terms of fit, I cut the Size 2 which was more than roomy through the mid section, but a wee too tight under the arms. I will add about 1 1/2″ to the circumference of the top at that point. And you can see my bra strap, ooops, sorry. I will either add a bra strap holder or widen the straps next time.
So another piece add to my #capsule wardrobe as I will definitely sew this again!
