Just a few weeks ago, I posted about a great indie dress pattern from Marsha Style, the Sia Dress. Super achiever, Taree Marsha, has just released her second pattern, the Leila Dress…in what…8 weeks?! I should be jealous over her entrepreneurial drive, but since she’s so sweet and great to work with, I’ll cut her some slack. lol.
I was again honored to pattern test with the same group of sewists from the Sia Dress and the consensus is that this DIY dress is a summer must-have.
It features a ” V neckline with gathered tiers. The shorter version has 3 tiers, with the maxi length dress having 4 tiers…There are optional ties that can be attached to the back of the dress to bring the waist in. The sleeve has gathers at the sleeve head and a gathered circular frill at the hem.”
There is a slip pattern included as well, so hacking options abound or use it to add extra security should you choose some peak-a-boo fabric.
Obs there is a lot of gathering so I’m dropping in a quick video I posted on Youtube to show you one option to make it easier.
Due to the gathering, I made no alterations or fitting adjustments. I know, shocker right?! But, it’s been known to happen. The neckline does drop low, so keep that in mind.
So how did I land on my fabric choice?
I was inspired by this free flowing, tons-of-ruffles Cynthia Rowley look. Her whole bohemian vibe this summer caught me and I used the ease of this look for inspiration.
The dress was sewn in a rayon gauze-like fabric in a rich kelly green. I top-stitched with Guterman top-stitch thread to key seams. The thread is fairly thick so it was slow sewing, but I needed the thickness to add the desired visual punch.
…but I did play with construction, so here we go:
Construction
- I altered the front panels. I simply pin-tucked a square of fabric large enough to accommodate both front pattern pieces
- Top-stitching was added to each tuck as well with both dual purpose and the thicker thread. I wish I had done a few more tucks tho.
In addition to the fullness of this DIY look, it’s the sleeves. It’s ALL about the sleeves. They are just enough to add that memorable detail and elevate the design. And as you can see, I’m pretty happy that I’m continuing with my pink and green summer collection… with a dash of neutrals.
Styling
- Shoes: Imo Slide from Bella Vita from Nordstrom
- Purse: Hand woven rattan from Amazon
- Earrings: Statement earrings from one of the best accessory shops on Martha’s Vineyard, Stefanie Wolf Designs.
This is a great summer pattern and I’m so happy to support my sew sis, Taree. You can purchase a pdf of the Leila Dress here.
