Hey Loves. A little applause for your friend because she made herself a bra! I’ve never sewn any of the bare essentials, but I made my first piece of DIY lingerie.
A shout out and lacy love to Rubies Bras who gifted me a bra kit to start my journey!
It began with a virtual consultation where we did some in-depth measurement taking to determine the best style and fit for me. Using these detailed measurements helped to guide us in choosing the proper cup and chest size. This was a great bespoke experience and it minimized the potential for an ill-fitting bra. I chose to make the Sahaara Bra in a soft, delicate pink. The pattern has three views, sheer, solid and lace, and I went for the full-coverage “solid” version.
The kit comes with everything needed to make a bra, all of which comes stored in a thoughtful lingerie wash bag. The bag included two types of fashion fabric; a bra tulle and a low-stretch satin. Also included were notions particular to bra-making: finishing tapes, hook/eye closures, stabilizer tape, and rings and sliders for the straps.
This was my first exposure to sewing lingerie so I found all of the resources on their website to be extremely helpful. On their tutorial page, there is a full-length sew-along that covers every step, and a few additional videos for more detailed sewing. It helps to have the visual support to guide you if you are unfamiliar with some of the sewing techniques involved.
The sewing manual is equally thorough and gives you plenty of construction options. You are literally walked through the process. My only sticky point was the intersection of the two cups. I looks fine, but I’m a perfectionist and wish I had read the instructions a little more carefully.
I did opt to line the bra cups with the bra tulle for a more opaque coverage. This isn’t necessary, but if I plan on wearing this to work there can be no wardrobe malfunctions. The end result is a well-fitted and custom constructed bra, tailored to me. Construction went quickly. I completed the entire project in a day which included pattern printing, cutting and construction.
Above you can see the beautiful color and the back closure. Also note how the binding and elastic are attached using a zig-zag stitch.
A better view of how lovely the back is designed.
Did I mention that it is wireless?! No underwire for the girls. A nice touch that makes it very comfortable to wear.
I’m very pleased with the outcome and I am so glad I had the opportunity to partner with Rubies Bra. There may be another version on the way!
