Hello everyone! Wow. What a whirlwind of events that have happened since I last posted. Covid-19 has consumed our attention and generated a time of uncertainty, but also of courage. I so admire the frontline workers who provide care to the sick and injured despite their own personnel risk of exposure. Here in Maryland, our governor has just issued a “stay-at-home” order effective today.
But despite these conditions, I consider myself extraordinarily blessed. My family is all safe and I am able to work entirely from home. Telecommuting exclusively has been a new normal, but a welcome adjustment because it could be otherwise. So since this is life right now, I am making the most of it. I have had more time behind the sewing machine and I am taking full advantage of it.
This DIY pattern has been in my sewing queue for MONTHS. Thank God for patient people because this top was made with a gorgeous navy and white challis provided by Harts Designer Fabrics for a guest blog post. Though it’s long overdue, I’m so glad I finally got to showcase both the fabric and the top.
I have a tendency to favor complicated patterns, the time-warping, true definition of #slowsewing kind. Well, this was a welcome change. The Array top is a simple construction garment with just 4 pattern pieces for this version. The top can be lengthened to a dress as well, but I opted for the top with these gathered statement “bell” sleeves and a plain waist. The indie pattern company, Papercut Patterns, has a winner here as it was easy to construct and the finished product is both elegant and simple.
As for the fabric, YUM-MEE! Because of the full sleeves, I would recommend something drapey. Since challis is one of my go-to fabric, it was the perfect selection. This particular fabric is no longer in stock, but Harts has a great selection of similar weights to chose from. This Lady McElroy “Summer Terrace” would be a great option…or the small print black and white Mochi Rayon Challis…or even this luscious green Shibori crepe.
Construction
Nothing to note, but I would suggest being careful with the neckline. I chose to use the bias binding per the instructions and it sits up a little. In future versions I will draft my own facing so that the neckline will lay flat.
Styling
JEANS: Nordstrom Sloan Jeans
SHOES: Steve Madden Faron Sandal
EARRINGS: Styled with large silver hoop earrings I’ve had for awhile.
JACKET: Burdastyle “Masterpiece” Blazer – pattern 101, April 2018 issue
This jacket is a sneak peak of another upcoming guest blog post. What a project! Lots of efforts went into this piece and it was well worth it!
I love this casual look, with and without the jacket, but the top will make its way into my work wardrobe too.
Be safe all. Love from a far as social distancing is key. And make the most of this time.
