Hey Loves! Since cut-out dresses are the norm this summer, I thought I’d give them a try. I’m not waiting until I de-fluff those last few pounds to do an ab reveal. Maybe not belly-button low, but enough to veer from my usual flow.
Sewing this DIY look, I also took a risk on fit. I have the classic “athletic” figure, code for no hips. With the BBL look so in right now, us straight-up-and-down people have to hold strong. I may shy away from body-con dresses because they demand too much of me, lol, but this McCall’s pattern (M8253) is slim-hip friendly. What I like about this pattern is the full skirt and ruching. Just enough of a peek to make it interesting.
The fabric is another gift from the clearance room gods at G Street Fabrics. It’s a rib knit with zero cotton and a decent amount of recovery when stretched. I specifically wanted strong recovery so that with time and body heat, the dress wouldn’t relax and look sloppy as with a cotton knit. I also like the deep beige, not just because I’m the queen of neutrals, but because the color notches the dress up. Neutral colors always add a touch of reserve, chic style.
Construction/Alterations
I dabbled a little on this sew.
I removed an inch through all bodice pieces, but should have removed an inch from the skirt as well.
I ruched the 3/4 sleeves on the side because they were non-descript otherwise.
I added a 5″ band at the bottom for length, but for a little more design interest. Subtle, but it’s the minor details. I wanted to the leave the hem unfinished, but there is a nick at the bottom so it’s now a must.
Styling
Bag: Medium Telfar bag in Bubblegum
Sandals: “Goldie Pearl” Summer Sandal, Stuart Weitzman
Sunnies: “Montauk” Peepers
Hat: Freebie from work!
Love how this turned out! I chose to style this more dressy-casual, but heels and the right statement jewelry will elevate the look. On to the next DIY fun!
