So this DIY style top was supposed to be a test run. Just a toile/muslin because surplice tops are an automatic fit adjustment. The wrap front tends to gape open which is my biggest concern. Since my body style is “short waisted”, I know I usually have to make adjustments to compensate for this. But on this first try I decided to go for it. Sewed it up un-edited which is living on the wild side for us sewists. lol.
Well the smile on my face says it all! SO GLAD I DID because the sewing gods were on my side. For this SIMPLICITY PATTERNS, #S8137, though the fit isn’t perfect, its close enough! It wasn’t worth redrafting to satisfy my normally insatiable perfectionism.
For the fabric I used this floral print challis from JOANN FABRICS that’s been in my stash for a while. Yay for stash busting. The large random flowers compliment the pattern and ended up being a great fabric choice, even if it is a toile. Did I mention that it’s buttery soft.
SEWING CONSTRUCTION
Construction was easy. The wrap feature is unique because it’s pleated. As for the peplum, it’s pleated as well rather than gathered. The bodice is lined with white acetate lining which was hand-sewn at the waist line. You know I like my garments to look as pretty inside as outside.
Rather than use my narrow hemmer, I serged the hem then folded and top-stitched. As you can see below, I serged the visible seam allowances of the peplum. Nothing challenging to sew, so it’s a quick sew…for slow-fashion.
STYLING THE LOOK
As for styling this feminine blouse for a more corporate-wear look, I paired it with my new favorite clear heels from Steve Madden, neutral pants from a suit I own and jewelry from Stella and Dot. The purse is a budget-friendly version of the popular round rattan bag.
But can we get into the real MVP. Me conquering my anxiety about a photo shoot in public. This is my first time venturing to a public location and having hubby snap pics. I’m not sure why I have been so apprehensive, but for some reason it took me a minute to work up the courage for this. Despite a few stares, I managed to get comfortable. After a while I thought, I’m proud of my craftsmanship and there is no rational reason for me not to share my makes in the best way possible. So I did the dang thing because I was determined. It’s a nice change to have an interesting backdrop other than locations scouted around my house, that exotic locale. Bahaha! As Eleanor Roosevelt said,
“Do something everyday that scares you.”
Well this was it. It wasn’t too bad and well worth the outcome.
This is piece No. 3 of my corporate chic look and going strong. You can also see PIECE 1 and PIECE 2.
