Burdastyle patterns have some sweat equity involved to create your DIY style. But I always feel it’s worth it because of the pattern drafting and unique styles.
The April 2019 issue is loaded with a range of excellent design options that are right up my alley, classic with an edgy twist. So when I saw this dress, #117, I knew it was a must.
The tie at the waste and “flared…hem dress with an asymmetric hem flounce and wrap detail” are perfect for my figure. I need the right design details to complement my shape and enhance my curves. So I tend to sew with that in mind.
Construction Details
Construction is fairly simple.
- The skirt bottom is sewn first. I opted to use my narrow hammer foot to hem all flounce pieces first before attaching them to the skirt front, back and asymmetrical front.
- For the tie piece, that is sewn along the side seams. I found the piece too large and it drooped in the front, so I removed a few inches from the sides for a more snug fit.
Sewing Alterations
- I added a lining to the dress. To draft the lining pieces, I duplicated the top pieces as is. For the skirt bottom, I duplicated the back, but for the front I omitted the asymmetrical seam where the accent flounce is sewn. The lining pieces end at the point where the skirt flounce is attached at the hem and it hangs free.
- I did my standard shortening of the bodice by an inch which was removed from both front and back bodice pieces.
- I also removed an inch at the back zipper at the neckline. I may revisit the approach and try darts along the back neckline instead because the zipper still sits proud of my neck a bit.
My fabric is a beautiful piece from A Fabric Place in Baltimore. This local shop cares high end fabric that can be fairly pricey, but there are always more budget friendly bolts and they will work with you on the price.
And though the fabric is black, it isn’t 100% opaque hence the need for a lining.
Final analysis, BurdaStyle does it again with a great dress that’s versatile. To style this, I see this an a LBD for a night out if accessorized right or worn with a blazer for a corporate workwear look.

I love this and you’ve inspired me to have a go at sewing it. I also love the pairing of the elegant black with funky yellow accessories.
